Ultimate Rock-Paper-Scissors Extra Chapter
Hey, guys, I've been super busy these last few years, but I was recently informed that an extra chapter of Ultimate Rock-Paper-Scissors was out. Thanks to Horatio Von Becker for the heads-up, by the way. I have no idea when it was released and why the artist even decided to add another chapter, but here we go! I also updated my original "Ultimate Rock-Paper-Scissors" post. Enjoy!

ReplyDeletehi, you probably won't see this but I'll post it anyway. will you continue translating the rest of the god web series (please please please). if you don't want to thats fine and I'll make a translation myself cause I really like the series but I've never translated manga before and I don't wanna butcher it so I think it'd be better if you did it but ur like dead so I don't think I'll really have a choice I'll give it like a few weeks idk I just really like the series bye

Delete1. what software and fonts do you reccomend (Its hard for me to pick fonts on my own because I am incredibly indecisive). the fonts you used for your translations seem good so what are they called?
2. how should I handle the really thin bubbles that only have one sentence, should I stack words on top of each other?
3. do you have any miscellaneous tips/tricks or common mistakes to avoid that I should know?

Delete1. I used Photoshop, but I didn't use any advanced features, so if you don't have Photoshop, any photo editing software that lets you insert text into photos will do. Getting rid of the original Japanese text will take some practice, but it's easy as long as they're inside speech bubbles. I recommend painting over the original text on a new layer instead of on the image itself, so that you can still go back and fix stuff later.
DeleteIf it's text outside of speech bubbles, it depends on what the background is. If it's some random pattern, you might be able to recreate it. If it's on top of a drawing, you'd have to redraw it, but I wouldn't go that far. Either, write the text as a translation note next to the panel, or if it's not a character, just put a white box on top of it big enough to cover the Japanese text.
As for fonts, I used Wild Words or Digital Strip for normal text in speech bubbles, Arial for titles or formal-looking text, Augie for sound effects and thoughts outside of speech bubbles, etc. You can use whatever fits the context and is close enough to the original Japanese font. Just don't use Comic Sans. You can find tons of fonts on dafont.com. I would advise against using too many different fonts though.
2. You'll just have to stack words on top of each other. Vertical text is out of the question as it's really hard to read and looks weird. Try to use short words if possible and split long words into multiple lines.
3. I sometimes caught myself adjusting my translation to the size and shape of the speech bubbles, but you should never do that. Use whatever translation conveys the original meaning of the Japanese text and if it ends up being too long for the speech bubble, you'll just have to somehow cram it into it.
Also, try to find a good balance between sticking to the original Japanese and localizing. Since this is a comedy manga, I would localize a bit more than normal. If there's a joke or pun, don't use Japanese words or translation notes explaining the joke. Try to find a joke or pun that's similar in English even if it means it's not an accurate translation anymore. A comedy manga is supposed to make people laugh, not teach them Japanese. As long as it's not a manga about Japan, there's no need to keep stuff that is uniquely Japanese like honorifics and concepts like senpai/kouhai.
The font size depends on the print resolution you set and obviously the size of the speech bubbles and the original text. I usually changed the print resolution to 90 pixels per inch (with resampling unchecked because resampling changes the image resolution). Then I can use a font size of 14 for normal text, but like I said it depends on the speech bubbles and the original text. If you use a very high print resolution like 300, you'll have to use tiny font sizes like 3.5 or 4.2, which is awkward to work with.
