How I stalked some dude with an exposed nipple and stumbled upon the Zenithian Sword

Hey guys, great title for a manga, eh? This one is a Dragon Quest V doujinshi that was originally posted on Pixiv by Nikiichi Tobita (MONSTER X MONSTER), when he was still an amateur artist. In fact, you'll notice a few similarities to MONSTER X MONSTER. You could say, this manga = MONSTER X MONSTER - DQ V. It's a more or less free adaptation of the "How I stalked some dude with an exposed nipple and stumbled upon the Zenithian Swordwwww" thread that was started on 2ch by an anonymous poster with the ID YDmPhSO2. So yeah, he's the author, I suppose. If the title is too long for you, the Japanese also refer to it as Bonfire NEET (焚き火ニート).

Note: You should really play Dragon Quest V before you read this one (doesn't matter if it's the original SNES, or one of its remakes on DS and PS2). It's a great game, so you should have played it anyway. Also, the author made a few minor changes to the DQ V story to make the main protagonist fit in.

Enjoy!

I've also never played any of the dragon quest games (I barely even heard of the game before finding this manga)

    1. I'm missing some of the RAWs, but yeah, I'm considering it.

It's not as funny as the niconico version though. Guess the Gangan editors toned it down. It's one of the reasons I prefer amateur manga. There are no editors and no censoring.

Since I started working full-time end of last year, I've been extremely busy trying to settle into my new job and new home. Translating the short Stretch and even shorter Kuro chapters is about all I can afford to translate as of now.

    1. Hey Budi,

the manga ends on Volume 5, which currently consists of only one chapter. Nikiichi Tobita posted that last chapter on Pixiv on February 16th, 2015, long after his first professional manga MONSTER x MONSTER was licensed and two days before the second volume of it was released. He even went back and redrew major parts of all chapters between volume 1 and volume 3 chapter 16 and added these fancy colorful covers. That's also why there won't be any fancy covers after chapter 17 for the rest of volume 3.

tl;dr The guy's a hard worker. I'm sure he's just been really busy with his professional career and will pick Bonfire NEET up sooner or later.

    2. Glad to know there are still more good chapters waiting to be translated. I have to say, despite the manga being a doujin, it has a very good character advancement compared to other seinen comics out there. It's a pretty good gem you've selected! Shame that monster x monster didn't take off. tbh, it's like a worse carbon copy of bonfire neet.

    1. Hey, yes, unfortunately, that's true. He did say it's just on hold though, so I'm hoping he'll continue working on it someday, but I'm sure he'll be busy with his licensed manga.

I'm a little bit disappointed. I can't read Japanese but it looks rather generic/mainstream. Lacking of the humour and uniqueness. Although, his drawing style is very mature and excellent.

@Translator: How many chapters does Volume 4 have?

      Delete
    4. That is a general problem I see with amateur artists turning pro. Their art and pacing improve, but they often lose what made them unique and funny (I blame the magazine editors). It was the same thing with YOKO. His licensed manga are great, but not quite the same as his 2ch work.

Volume 4 of Bonfire NEET has 32 chapters.

    1. Thanks for worrying about me and sorry this chapter took so long. As you can probably guess, I've been a bit busy lately and it was a very wordy chapter (like most chapters in Bonfire NEET). I'll try not to take too long with the next one.

Quick question, why not use this comic for his licensed manga? But instead he create a new story that seems so generic.

    1. My guess is that there would have been copyright problems regarding the Dragon Quest references that are everywhere in this manga. They would have had to make some sort of deal with Square Enix and I'm sure it would have cost a lot.

    2. Thanks for the reply,

Well such a shame, another question, I read a manga named monster x monster, is he the author? Because the main protagonist is also a neet.
And that manga just got cancelled now why would he not use that manga since it's not using any of dragon quest or any other references?
You know it's just such a shame that his licensed manga looks nothing special about.

  59. "Translator Fag", Do you know of any other manga's with similar mc's as in that they are really unique and non-generic and have an incredible amount of character development. The only other i can think of is Guts from Berserk. Btw both Bonfire NEET and Berserk or my favourite mangas by far. (probably due to the main characters being so unique and interesting). Also thank you so much for translating this manga it is so good and you don't have to know anything from dragon quest to enjoy it. :)

  66. Still my favourite thing to read. I can't believe I've read this almost every year since I first found it. I have no idea how I found it, I'd played DQ5 beforehand and I'm in love with this. Might be a bit cringe but I can't tell you how much this manga is to me.

Shame that it really does seem dead in the water now, although I don't think there will be any hope of a return I can always hope that on my next reread I'll find news of a new chapter somewhere.

Well, see you all next year.
